Abstract
Previous data, presented on 1991, indicated stagnation in the renewal rate of the artisanal fleet as well as problems in operativity and economical effectiveness, and consequently, production difficulties in Sucre and Nueva Esparta, eastern Venezuela. Almost 20 years later, some of these problems persist, associated to strong inflections in some indicators trends. This shows that renewal rate has been just enough to maintain the number of fishing units, and that it have not backed any expansion to support the increasing of the population demand. This stabilization of the fleet throughout two decades could explain average raises of 15,000% on fish selling prices (the steady or declinating fishing yields could be added) which surpass in 12.000% the increase of the official exchange parity for the referential dollar in the same period.
