Abstract
During 2005 in the Cuban Shelf there were 5311 boats in the sport recreational fishing, figure that stays at the same level. The number of those boats at the North of Villa Clara represents the 5th place of the total. They were carried out surveys and a workshop with the fishermen to validate the results. The most captured species are grey snapper, mutton snapper and grunts, being observed decrease of sizes and annual captures in the first two. The sport fishing is carried out in all place of the sector, being the more important and frequented areas Cádiz Bay, Sagua Bay and Green Key. The months of biggest capture are June, July and August. The more common baits are fresh anchovy, sardine and little shad, being the first two species of commercial importance which increase the costs. The capture obtained by fisherman per fishing travel varies between 5 and 14 kg. The annual total capture in the sport fishing area is about 100 t. The annual total capture obtained by the sport fishing and the commercial fishing is about 1100 annual t. This figure represents an annual fishing productivity of 0.72 t / km2 in the sector. Most of the fishes of the platform are in their maximum exploitation level. For that reason any fishing analysis requires of the knowledge of this activity.
