Abstract
The feeding regime of red snapper, Lutjanus purpureus (Poey, 1875) was studied utilising 433 specimens, collected monthly from June 1984 to May 1985 in the ports of landing of the offshore artisinal fishery in Margarita Island. The diet components were identified and related to sex and size of the specimens. The diet constituted organism belonging to four taxonomic groups: Osteichthyes, Crustácea, Mollusca and Polychaeta. The presence of these dietary components leads to the conclusion that Lutjanus purpureus is a carnivorous predator dietary. Variations were not observed with respect to the sex and size of fish.
