Abstract

The red grouper (Epinephelus morio) is the most important fishery in Yucatan, Mexico. In this fishery participates three fleets: one of them is the Mexican artisan, another the Mexican mechanized and the Cuban fleet. For the fishery assessment we applied the structured by age and catch-mortality models with information from 1958 to 2006. The biological reference points (objective, ORP and limit, LRP) were determined and a simulation model performed at biomass with different catch quotas. We analyzed the impact of each fleet over biomass, and the response of it, to variation of fleet magnitude. The biomass estimated in 2006 was 64,097 t. The ORP estimated was 124,274 t and the LRP was 74,564 t. Three scenarios (catch quotas) simulated for the biomass response. The resource is over-exploited, so it is important to apply a sustainable management
