Abstract
Sex ratio, length at first maturity, and the sexual cycle of red snapper were investigated between March 1999 and February 2002, through the analysis of 1,280 organisms (Total length TI = 23.8-85.9 cm). L. campechanus specimens were caught by the fishery fleet from the northern (Progreso) and westem (Campeche) coasts of Yucatan Península. Conected red snapper gonads were weighed (for gonadosomatic index calculation) and microscopically examined (for stage of maturation classification). Global sex ratio (1:1.05; female:male) did not differ significantly from a 1:1 sex ratio (p> 0.05). Mínimum size at first maturity was 24.7 cm TI for females and 23.8 cm TI for males. High frequency of females and males (n> 30 % each month) were found sexually active all the year round. Spawning period of the species occurred between March and November, with gamete release peaks in May and from August to October. Spawning areas for red snapper from the southern Gulf ofMexico were observed in the northern and northwestern parts of The Campeche Bank, between 48 and 117 m dept.
