Abstract

This presentation tries to show a baselines, on the effectiveness of handling of the Marine Protected Areas (MPA's) high-priority in the region of Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano (SAM), based on the information collected directly from selected Directors of the MPA’s; for which it was used the methodology designed in a joint effort of Project SAM and Program MAR-TNC, produced in form of Protocol of Indicators and Form of Evaluation. In a total of 20 MPA's of the influence area of the Project for the SAM was applied the methodology pre mentioned, that included MPA's from the following countries of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, with special interest in the transfronterizas areas. Common parameters were identified, to make an analysis of the indicators at regional level, which allows to in the end show to a perspective of the effectiveness of handling in the region of influence of the SAM, offering conclusions and recommendations for the management and permanent monitoreo of the effectiveness of handling of the MPA's. It does not constitute a report that describes the level as handling of the MPA's, rather the intention, is to identify, emptiness, weaknesses and priorities of handling, which allows to reorient strategies in the search of communitarian support, governmental and financial. Parallelly the application of the tool allows to improve it and to update it, according to the particular characteristics of the region
