Abstract

The Parque Nacional Laguna de La Restinga, Margarita Island, Venezuela, hosts one of the main natural banks of mangrove oysters of the species Crassostrea rhizophorae. This is a fishery resource that represents one of the main economic income sources of the people of La Restringa town. The time series of landings of this resource from 2001 to 2005 shows that the largest extraction of oysters took place in 2003 when 16.236 dozens were landed, and the minimum extraction was observed in 2002 when only 269 dozens were produced. During the years 2001, 2004 and 2006 the extraction values varied between 2.358 to 7.250 dozens, increasing progressively through time. This time series allows the estimation of the productivity of the natural bank and contributes to the decision making of measures leading to its recuperation and conservation, such that the mangrove oyster exploitation in the area is sustainable in time.
