Abstract

The Goliath grouper, Epinephelus itajara, a large sized (~ 2 m TL, > 400 kg) and critically endangered Serranid, is protected in many countries. In Mexico, this grouper does not entitle a full protection or a clear regulation according to its biological characteristics, which in turns put in severe risk its population. Further, an analysis of its fishery records is lacking as to provide a clear trend on its fishery situation; however, fishermen argue that catches have substantially diminished. This work aims to elucidate the fishery situation of the Goliath grouper from a traditional fishery landing location (Dzilam Bravo) on the northern Yucatan Peninsula. Historical fishery records of the Goliath from a fisherman cooperative were taken and analyzed to describe its situation and offer proper information to fishery authorities as to regulate the fishery, and even establish a full protection. Conservation measures are also considered as to merge the situation following international regulations.
