Abstract

Punta Gavilán in southern Quintana Roo is a very important place for queen conch Strombus gigas because it is a zone of settlement and growth. Given the economic and ecologic importance of the conch, a study has been conducted to ascertain the factors that determine the settlement and growth of juveniles of this species. ; From February 1-992 to July 1993 monthly samples were collected to obtain siphonal length (LS) of more 2900 organisms, whose length fluctuated between 5 to 26.5 cm. In the process 1200 conch were tagged. Length frequency data were used to determine population growth parameters by indirect methods: a) ELEFAN (L = 32.35 cm, K = 0.345, -t0= 0.13) and b) SLCA (L = 30.0 cm. K = 0.34, and -t0 = 0.39 (annual). The highest recuitment peak was in August, with a second peak in November.
