Abstract
Nicaragua has a large extension of reefs in the Caribbean area that is probably larger than its own territorial extension (130,000 km2). These are mostly located in the Miskito Cays, Perlas Cays and Corn Island (Reyes, 2016). Currently, coral reefs are in an alarming state as a result of anthropogenic activities that have increased greenhouse gases and as a consequence of this there has been an increase in temperature, ocean acidification and increased sediments. in marine-coastal ecosystems, which, in effect, make corals vulnerable to diseases, predators and stress situations that prevent the emergence of new colonies of these highly valuable organisms. This pilot project has been working to restore 0.5 hectares of coral reefs in the Cayos Perlas Wildlife Refuge Protected Area and 0.5 hectares in the Corn Island Municipality Marine Terrestrial Landscapes Protected Area. This work has been carried out within the framework of the project: S-20-215 NIC we ADAPTogether, Adaptation to climate change through sustainable community management and responsible use of coastal ecosystems on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua funded by the Federal Ministry of the Republic of Austria and DKA Austria, executed by Horizont 3000, Bluefields Indian & Caribbean University (BICU) and the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast (URACCAN).
