Abstract

Guided by fisher questions & in collaboration with commercial stone crabbers in The Bahamas, we identified a novel claw removal technique, called induced autotomy (the “stick-it” method), which significantly increases the post-harvest survival of stone crabs (Menippe mercenaria) by nearly 30% (Walus et al. 2023). To ensure the effective dissemination of our findings & promote behaviour change within the commercial stone crab fishery, we actively engaged with fishers to design targeted messaging & communication tools, utilizing their networks as conduits for information sharing.
