Abstract

The artisanal fishery in Quintana Roo, Mexico is aimed to species of commercial value such as thorny lobster, pink snail and shrimps. Nevertheless there is a very significant fishery of some species of the grudge group. One of these species is boquinete, Lachnolaimus maximus whose exploitation constitutes one of the main supports of handicraft fishery, directed to demersal fish, in Holbox Island, Quintana Roo. In order to know its fishery, 2.893 length data (furcal length) coming from commercial capture were analyzed, those were performed during September-November, 2002, August-December, 2003 and January-February, 2004. It was found that sizes were located between 300 to 360 mm LF and the most captured size was of 330 mm LF, an anova test was performed to know if the captured sizes were equal among the trial months and the study showed that there were significant variations (F=29.83; P<0.05). The growth parameters were obtained by means of shepherd´s programme (1987) lt= 650(1-exp-0.30*(t-to), the total mortality obtained was (Z=2.44), a natural mortality (M = 0,65 year-1), mortality by fishing (F = 1,79), and an exploitation rate of (E = 0,73). This study is the first made for this species in this greatly important fishery zone, therefore we will be providing base information of its population dynamics, and it will useful so that in future works sustainable handling of the studied species can be established
