Abstract
This paper describes the process used to design a reef monitoring program in Caribbean Nicaragua and the results of preliminary research in the Pearl Cays. The document is the first published account of collaboration among U.S., Nicaraguan, and Caribbean institutions for the purpose of implementing a reef fish and benthic survey training program in Nicaragua. Methods used to institutionalize a reef monitoring program supported by government, not-for-profit organizations, and universities are outlined. The results of the reef fish and benthic data gathered by university professors and students in Caribbean Nicaragua are presented and discussed to provide the framework for forging additional support for reef monitoring in Nicaragua and the wider-Caribbean
