Abstract

Coastal areas are essential parts of a life support system that today faces severe human pressures. Mitigation of possible negative effects on resources and the environment due to increasing human needs involves a better understanding of spatial coastal cover changes. Actions for management of the coast require up to date data on the location and extent of landscapes modified by human activities and/or natural phenomena, such as hurricane and fire. In this work, radiometric changes between 1979 and 1990 in two Landsat MSS images of the coastal areas of the Yucatan were detected using a change detection analysis by Dobson et. al., (1995). Land radiometric changes were related to roads with the use of proximity maps.
