Abstract

This paper provides an analysis of the potential application(s) of landscape architecture processes in designing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The research methods used are 1) a literature review to provide background information on the design process used in both terrestrial and marine systems, 2) surveys of protected area managers to gather information on the ability of designs to meet management goals, and 3) an analysis of the coupling of MPAs with adjacent terrestrial protected areas, specifically addressing fragmentation and edges. The results demonstrate how land and marine management are similar and different, and how coupling these two systems can contribute to improving coastal ecosystem management.
