Abstract
An evaluation of Quintana Roo’s coastal and freshwater bodies was carried out in oder to select the areas most suitable for aquaculture. Water quality biotic and socioeconomic variables were qualified and quantified. Hardness and alkalinity values fluctuated within 85.6 and 140 and 165 and 252 mg/l respectively. pH and oxygen readings are within recommended aquiculture limits: 7.41-8.03 and 4.1-6.27 mg/l. Among suitable species in Quintana Roo for aquaculture are Penaeus duorarum, Callinectes sapidus, Macrobranchium acanthurus, Centropomus sp., Lutjanus sp. y Trachinotus sp., Oreochromis mossambicus in brackish and marine water. In freshwater Cichlasoma spp., Rana spp. and Poecilia spp. and Oreochromis spp. Lagoon Om, Buenavista and areas on the Hondo river side, Chiquilá, Holbox, X’calak-Mahahual and Puerto Morelos-Chackmuchuc are recommended as pilot locations for aquiculture in this state.
