Abstract
The artisanal fishery in Haiti has traditionally received little attention from government agencies and local research institutions, even though it provides a source of income to 30,000 to 50,000 Haitian fishers. This lack of attention has resulted in a paucity of the data that are necessary to rigorously assess the state of the marine resources and to understand the socio-economic environment of the resource users. Recently, considerable efforts have been made by the government to improve the lives of fishers of the Southeast of Haiti by supporting the development of an improved artisanal fishery. This has allowed some level of standardized monitoring of the fishing activity in this southeast region. Here, we present the results of one year of monitoring with emphasis on fishing practices. We also provide semi-quantitative data on catch composition.
