Abstract
The Marine Protected Areas have a major importance for sustaining life at sea, due to favorable environmental conditions - conditions of shelter and support for nutrition and reproduction of most species that live there. Thereby contributing to sustainable fisheries. The reefs are highly diverse ecosystems, rich in natural resources and of great ecological, economic and social importance, home of important fish stocks and contributing to the livelihood of many traditional coastal communities that support their activities in the vast empirical knowledge, acquired and accumulated through several generations. Accordingly, this paper aims to demonstrate the importance of marine protected areas through the traditional fishermen view. These areas are of importance to preserve marine biodiversity and also contributes to the sustainability of fisheries activities at Reserva Extrativista Marinha of Corumbau.
