Abstract
The Reef Check protocol was first implemented in 1996 as a community-based coral reef monitoring protocol that uses recreational divers world wide. Currently, there are 82 countries or territories that regularly conduct Reef Check surveys. Since January 2004, RC was established in the Dominican Republic as per requierements of the Blue Flag certification the Romanan Bayahibe Hotel Association was pursuing. At the same time, snorkelers and diver of all ages have joined monitoring and management efforts in many areas of the DR. Data gets local and global use almost inmediately to produce reports on coral reef health.
