Abstract

The Conch Heritage Network, at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, is a long term conservation program with a comprehensive network in Florida and the Caribbean region for the exchange and dissemination of information of queen conch biology, conservation, culture, and fisheries. In 2000, the Conch Heritage Network and the Keys Marine Conservancy produced a five-minute video entitled “A Conch’s Life Story” documenting the life cycle of the queen conch. With considerable support from the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund and the Sheila Johnson-Brutsch Charitable Trust, the video was updated to complement the popular “Conch in the Classroom” lesson plans. The history, geography, biology, fisheries, and aquaculture are addressed in the new twelve-minute DVD. Additionally, the DVD is narrated in English and Spanish, and language preference can be selected using the menu option. The Conch Heritage Network has distributed nearly 200 copies of the DVD to schools and educational institutions throughout the United States and the Caribbean. The DVD “A Conch’s Life Story” will be shown during this presentation
