Abstract

For the analysis of the stomach contents of Sphyraena barracuda, where used 112 individuals provided from landing of areas adjacent to the island of San Andrés, Bolívar and Albuquerque keys; the alimentary items was identified to the lowest taxonomical group used and it has demonstrated that his basic food is consisting on 98,1% of fishes, the others alimentary groups are organic material, fish bait and invertebrates; this behaviour is similar if it is calculated between areas. Calculating the Relative importance index (IIR), in a generally way it shows fishes and invertebrates as accidental preys, as secondary preys only fishes was found and principal prey none item have been identify, because it is compound by organic material and fishes parts; the previous results demonstrate that the great barracuda food habits is based on fast-swimming of surface and reef dwelling active and sluggish fishes, proving that it is a piscivores species and it doesn’t has a preference on one type of prey, but that diet depends on the food that is available in the environment.
