Abstract

Lutjanus synagris represents an important specie in the natural balance of marine reef ecosystems. Being an important target in fisheries, the population has been intensively exploited for comercial porpose in the region. Attempting an approach in the maintenance of vulnerable fishery resources, criopreservation essays were deliver with red snapper colected during march – may 2004. With the purpose in optimazing the technique develop by the marine aquaculture investigation group in the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, the effectiveness of two crioprotectors (1,2 propadiol and DMSO) and an activator (filtered marine water with different concentrations: 33, 36 and 39 UPS) were evaluated in the criopreservation process. The sample (semen), extracted from a mature and living individual, was macro (volume, color, smell, pH) and microscopic (motility and vitality) characterize before and after the process to establish the quality of the semen. The semen volume registered for the gonads collected was 0,533 ml ± 0,057 , with normal smell and pH (6-7). 1,2 propadiol registered a better motility in time for all the treatments and a vitality of 65% ± 5, above DMSO (50% ± 10). The activators effectiveness was estadistically different at least for one (H5.801=15.189; p << 0.05), being the 39UPS concentration more effective (U: < 0.05). The cripreservation process offers an alternative in the recovery of heavily exploited populations.
