Abstract

In this work are presented the results obtained in larvicultures of Strombus gigas, under laboratory conditions in CINVESTAV -IPN. The sampling was realized during the reproduction season In the Reserve of Biosphere Banco Chinchona, Quintana Roo. Nine cultures were realized from hatching to settlement, to evaluate the development, growth and survival.\For all cultures the same methodology has been used: density of 200 larvae by litter, feeding with Tetraselmis suecica at a concentration of 1,000 algal cells/ml, temperature of 29°±10ºC and natural photoperiod. The time of hatching varied between 92 and 95 hours with a average of 94±1.06 hours after the ovoposition. The shell length at hatching was of 296±10.23 µm (n = 210 larvae) and the larvae showed two velar lobes and 1.5 shell whorls.\Larvae reachedmet a morphosis at 30 days and developed a shell length between 980 and 988 µm. with a average of 983±3.55± µm. The best survival was obtained in July (42 %) and the low survival in September, with only 13%. The results obtained in the cultures shows that is possible realize the incubation of egg masses from natural ovoposition period and obtain good results in development, growth but not in survival, under laboratory conditions.
