Abstract

The aquaculture in developing countries is limited in one way for the lack of knowledge of the lipid and protein content of the live zooplankton supplied to the fish and crustaceans larvae. This cause mass mortality in the first stage of larval development, related with lipid and protein content of live food, water quality and management which are the main factors that affect the larval survival. This paper show the results of the chemical composition in percentage (%) of dry matter, organic matter, inorganic matter, crude lipid, crude protein and carbohydrate of different zooplankters. From the analysis of the rotifer Brachionus plicarilis reared in the microalgae Terraselmis chuii, the percentage of the different components were 3.71 +- 0.269: 52.79 + 0.267; 47.21 +- 0.257; 1.63 +- 0.198; 12.07 +- 0.73 and 39.09 +- 0.686 respectively. The percentage of the components of the mix culture, B. plicatilis and the copepodite Oithona ovalis, reared in Chaetoceros gracilis were 8.96 +- 0.851; 60.05 +- 1.009; 5.72 +-0.195: 13.09 +- 0.675 and 41.29 +- 1.200, respectively. The percentage of the components of the same mixture, but reared in Terraselmis chuii, were 9.97 +-0.483; 62.65 +- 0.595; 37.35 +- 0.591; 5.52 +- 0.659; 12.53+-0.839 and 44.60 +-1.386, respectively. The percentage of the components from the mysidaceo Metamisydosis insdaris from a farm pond were 3.86+-0.521: 74.18+-1,133; 25.82 +- 1.330; 7.81 +- 0.478; 23.97 +- 1.538 and 42.40 +- 2.546, respectively. The percentage of the components from the harpacticoid copepodite Methys sp. from a farm pond. were 3.08 +- 0.529; 62.90 +- 1.560; 37.30 +- 1.570; 2.20 +-0.692; 12.35 +- 0.410 and 48.35 +- 1.828 respectively. The percentage of the components from Artemia nauplii newly hatched from a natural salt lake of Margarita island were 2.21 +- 1.234; 61.56 +- 1.967; 37.87 +- 0.789; 2.21 +-0.386; 10.19 +- 0.812 and 39.69 +- 1.230, respectively. The results shown that the chemical composition of the live zooplankton, that is supplied to the fish larvae, varied according the feed consumed and the zooplankton species.
